VENICE

Built on 116 islands and connected by 409 bridges, this stunning city appears to float on water. Venice, or the Divine Republic, is home to magnificent architecture and one of the world's greatest art collections. The city is best explored by vaporetto (water bus) and on foot; discerning visitors travel out od season to avoid the crowds and the heat.

There are numerous places to visit in this fascinating city:

St Mark's Square
Dominated by St Mark's Basilica whose Byzantine architecture reflects the city's trading links with the East. Gold mosaics and marble floors make the interior just as impressive.

Doge's Palace
Adjacent to the Basilica di San Marco, the achitecture of the palace exemplifies the Venetian Gothic style, and thanks to the patronage of its former occupants, is filled with works by Venetian Renaissance masters such as Veronese and Tintoretto.

Bridge of Sighs
An integral part of the Doge's Palace, the brige acted as the link between the prison and the coutrs. It was named after the sound the prisoners made as they were returned to the cells and was often their last view of the city.

Rialto Bridge
Completed in 1591, it was once the only crossing of the Grand Canal by foot and is now at the cultural centre of Venice.

Santa Maria delle Salute
This imposing church at the entrance to the Grand Canal was built in honour of the Virgin Mary and is a masterpiece of Venetian Baroque. Others may simply recognise it as the church featured in the last Indiana Jones movie.

MURANO

Located on an island in the Venetian Lagoon, Murano is an interesting place to visit and famous for its glass.  A visit to the glassworks and a demonstration of glass blowing will provide an insight into this trade that has been associated with Venice for centuries and has changed little.

AQUALANDIA
Water amusement park in Lido di Jesolo, open during the summer.

AN ITALIAN COOKERY LESSON
Visit a local farm with its own agrotourism and, under the watchful eye of the chef, learn how to make pasta, pizza or tiramisu and then eat your creations in the restaurant.

WINE TASTING
Vist a local vineyard to find out how the wine is made. Naturaly there will be the chance to taste the local tipple - within limits of course!
