This old mine is situated on the Pass Thurn 10 km south of Kitzbuhel.
Jochberg was first mentioned as a mining village in 1447. By 1830 there were 16 km of working galleries and 2 km of shafts on various levels. In its heyday, the mine employed 160 men in over 30 km (18 3/4 miles) of workings and 134 tons of copper ore were extracted every year. Until 1874 the ore was also smelted in Jochberg. The last shift was run on 31st July 1926 when the "Kupferplatte" finally closed down.
In 1990, the old gallery was made into the "Kupferplatte" mining museum, where visitors can descend 500m by pit railway.
Located on the site of the former granary and in the medieval tower of the city's fortifications, the recently refurbished museum stands out among Kitzbühel's cultural buildings.
